(2012) First WNK4-hypokalemia animal model identified by genome-wide association in Burmese cats (PLOS ONE); carrier frequency estimate (~14.9%) came from a service-lab dataset biased toward cats already suspected at risk. No Bombay-specific prevalence study was found; Bombay is a Burmese-derived breed and inherits the same risk pool.
An inherited WNK4 gene mutation causing episodes of muscle weakness, most visible as neck ventroflexion, usually appearing in kittens 2-6 months old. First mapped in Burmese cats, the breed behind the Bombay's development. A DNA test is available.

Breed study Lyons LA, et al. (2016) identified the ALX1 mutation in Burmese cats (Dev Biol); Gandolfi B, et al. estimated ~5.7% carrier frequency in the Burmese population. Bombay is derived from Burmese x American Shorthair crosses and shares Burmese ancestry, but no Bombay-specific carrier-frequency study was found; risk depends on the specific Burmese lines behind a given cat.
A lethal congenital skull and facial malformation (ALX1 gene) inherited as autosomal recessive; homozygous kittens are affected in utero or die/are euthanized shortly after birth. The Bombay descends directly from Burmese breeding lines that carry this mutation. A DNA carrier test exists.
