Confirmed Lyons LA, et al. Aristaless-like homeobox protein 1 (ALX1) variant associated with craniofacial structure and frontonasal dysplasia in Burmese cats. Dev Biol. 2016;409(2):451-8 (PMID 26610632) - a 12bp ALX1 deletion, 100% concordant with the defect; homozygotes have lethal frontonasal dysplasia, heterozygotes show mild brachycephaly. UC Davis VGL cites roughly 5.7% carrier frequency in Burmese and related breeds. European-type Burmese lines are largely unaffected.
An ALX1 gene mutation carried by some Contemporary-style American Burmese lines. One copy can produce a shortened muzzle; two copies cause a severe skull and facial malformation that is not compatible with life. Genetic testing lets breeders avoid at-risk pairings.
