Confirmed Both diseases were first characterized in Korats and are named for the breed. GM2: Cork LC, et al. Am J Pathol. 1985 (PMID 4040927). GM1: Ogawa H, et al. Acta Neuropathol. 1997 (PMID 9754965). UC Davis VGL offers DNA tests for both mutations; no published carrier-frequency or affected-kitten rate exists for the current breeding population, but widespread voluntary testing since the 1990s has sharply reduced affected litters.
Fatal inherited lysosomal storage disease first identified in this breed - GM1 (GLB1 mutation) and GM2/Sandhoff-type (HEXB mutation) both cause tremors, ataxia, blindness, and seizures in kittens, with death before 8-10 months of age. Both are autosomal recessive; DNA testing lets breeders avoid producing affected kittens.
