Confirmed [1] GSD-IV is an autosomal recessive disease first described and directly linked to the Norwegian Forest Cat (Fyfe et al. 1992, Pediatric Research). UC Davis VGL, PawPeds, and multiple veterinary genetics labs offer a direct DNA test for the GBE1 mutation. Carrier frequency has been reported at roughly 15% in the US and 12% in Europe; two-carrier matings produce 25% affected kittens on average.
A fatal, breed-specific genetic disease caused by a GBE1 gene mutation that blocks normal glycogen storage. Most affected kittens die at or shortly after birth; a rare few appear normal until roughly 5 months old before muscle, heart, and nervous system degeneration sets in. There is no treatment.
